WATCHING THE ASPARAGUS GROW by Jeff Wilkins
“Times Are A-Changing”
Wilkins does an excellent job of putting on display how isolated communities of almost incestuous commonalities can, with time or as individuals die out and are replaced by a younger generation, be dragged kicking and screaming into being more accepting and inclusive. Previous summer tourists who have fallen in love with Cooper’s Cove take up permanent residence bringing with them their more progressive, tolerant urban and suburban values. Blacks, gays, and lesbians move in and open businesses.
